Throughout the winelands of the Cape, there are numerous NGOs caring for children who suffer from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and other severe physical and mental disabilities. Alcohol abuse is rife in disadvantaged communities in the winelands. Women who drink excessively during pregnancy expose their children to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The alcohol penetrates the placenta and destroys the fetus. As a result, children are born with physical abnormalities andsevere learning disabilities. These NGOs are not self-sustaining and struggle to provide optimum care and support due to a lack of funding and skilled human resources.

Each month over fifty of South Africa’s leading wine estates deliver their finest wines to a central depot in the Stellenbosch winelands, where the bottles are packaged into a Mystery Box which is marketed through the internet and direct sales to consumers under the Wines with Heart brand. Wine lovers are provided with a unique opportunity to enjoy top quality South African wines whilst making a difference to the lives of needy children. Profits from this flourishing social enterprise are invested into capacity building programmes and vital resources for NGOs in the Winelands dealing with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and severely learning disabilities.
