Little Angels is a rehabilitative, residential care center for 16 severely disabled children offering solace, treatment and care to these special children, nestled under Gods wing.

As a result of the severity of their brain damage and resulting physical disabilities, these children need 24/7 individual care, as they cannot perform any or very limited self-help functions. They have to be fed, bathed, dressed, and they all wear nappies.  Their ages range from 1 year to 22 years.

The facility offers holistic care, and the staff a highly motivated to provide the children’s needs – physical, emotional, medical care and therapy.  Each child follows a physio- and occupational therapy program on a daily basis, which has been individually and uniquely worked out under the guidance of qualified therapists from Scenesio, who give our staff on-the-job training.  The staff work according to a roster, as the children require care around the clock.

Daycare is also offered for children with disabilities and you can contact Anne Jacobs on 021 8510908 or 0797734348 for further information or to secure a placement for your child for 2012.

In July 2011, Little Angels underwent a change in middle management and various changes have followed since the appointment of Anne Jacobs as Operational Manger and Gina Raubenheimeras supervisor. The daily routine was re-assessed and the center now operates according to the principals of the La Vie Training and the whole approach is more holistic. Including the various therapies, stimulation programs, alternative communication and much more. Due to vast networking endeavors, 2012 also has many exciting changes in store so watch this space!

All this is very costly and Little Angels is 96 % dependent on donations and sponsorships (financially and in kind), from the business sector and private individuals. The past 6 years have seen no funding from government and therefore we are at the mercy of the corporates and individuals on the street to help us offer the much needed care for these special children.

With the season of giving around the corner, everybody can make a big difference in 16 children’s lives by helping in the following ways:

  • Donation of one of the following items: food, toiletries, cleaning materials, medical supplies, clothing, toys with movement / lights /noise, musical equipment.
  • Sponsor a child for therapy or school fees.
  • Sponsor an employee’s wages.
  • Sponsor a tank of petrol, water/electricity account or any of the daily running costs.
  • Become a volunteer and spend time with the children, playing, reading books, feeding them, etc. This is a commitment with great rewards.

No donation is too big or small and every donation / sponsorship that you might make towards the care of these very vulnerable group of children is greatly appreciated. Little Angels is a Section 18a company, BBBEE accredited and is registered as a NPO and PBO, therefore any donation you make is tax deductible.

Little Angels also sell the Helen Harper range of nappies, which are imported from Belgium. The nappies are of a very high quality and are extremely reasonably priced. If you order nappies, they will be delivered to your door and a percentage of the monies paid will go towards Little Angels to cover the essential running costs.

The Anna Foundation 3 R’s “Reading, Running, Right-ing” programme has undergone a number of positive changes over the past few months. Through our literacy and numeracy hour (Reading), sports lessons (Running) and life skills programmes (Right-ing), we aim to move with the times and focus on our learners’ greatest needs.

Image

Although the structure of our Reading (literacy/numeracy) programme has stayed the same (grade specific worksheets for children with life skills themes guiding each lesson) we are aware that a great deal of children are not able to complete worksheets at their grade level and this problem needed to be addressed and taken back a step. Special remedial programmes have been designed to address specific problem areas of learners – our project managers and remedial volunteers give much needed tailor-made assistance to those children who require additional one-on-one academic support.  In addition to this, greater attention to numeracy in 2011 also meant that we became acutely aware of the phenomenal investment that needs to be made with all learners of all ages regarding basic mathematics. Our teacher in charge of all education matters at the Anna Foundation (Nellie de Wet – Head of Education) started designing new numeracy programmes focusing on simple concepts such as adding and subtracting (for Grades 1 – 3) and multiplication and division for grades 4 until 10. Numeracy games have been introduced to encourage the children to practice their times tables and basic maths concepts. We will now be looking at how we can take our learners back to basics with home language. We will be designing basic programmes using simple readers and stories to assist children with language.

In our Running programme (physical development and well-being of each child) we have focussed on assisting with the development of specific motor skills. This development is crucial to the child’s all round well-being as poor motor skills can lead to poor concentration and poor school results (and poor self-esteem). Over the past few months we have also paid attention to developing the children’s fitness levels, team sports such as soccer and tag rugby, including fun games and general bike skills.

The Anna Foundation has had many more teenagers join in our programmes over the past few months and as such started doing teenage workshopsas part of our Right-ing(life skills) programme. We found peer learning and peer interaction between farms was a great tool for encouraging positive attitudes with our teens. Peer pressure is a large part of these teenagers’ lives and ensuring this pressure is positive can make all the difference.  In addition to these teen workshops, we have takentwo groups of children camping for 3 days each during the past few months. The camps took place on a farm outside Barrydale which is also a baboon sanctuary and wellness centre. The children spent time learning about the wildlife, interacting with the group of Barrydale farm children (learning to give back to others) and learning valuable life skills. They also rode bikes, played team building games, did drumming and dancing and spent time sharing life stories. The teenager camp was specifically used to help these children with matters such as group pressure, drugs, early pregnancy and future goals.

More wine farms

As promised, we are constantly trying to increase our portfolio of wine farms and increase the variety of different wines in our mixed cases.

The Boer, is Stefan Gerber, great-great grandson of President Paul Kruger, with a massive passion for Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Mediterranean varietals.  Stefan has harvested in India as well as being wine-maker of a prestigious South African Estate – he has traveled extensively in the major wine producing countries and has an innate knowledge of working the major international wine markets.

The Brit, is Alex Milner, wine-maker at Natte Valleij (after stints in the South of France and India) and great-great grandson of Field Marshall French – who led the “Relief of Kimberley” – with a passion for Petit Verdot, Bordeaux-blends and anything odd.

110 years ago, these two best friends (they met at Stellenbosch while studying viticulture & oenology) forefathers were bitter enemies and now they’ve combined to make wines for all the people of South Africa (and the world) to enjoy. ~ from website More

We have recently added a new beneficiary, The Anna Foundation.  The Anna Foundation works with farm children and unskilled and/or unemployed farm women in disadvantaged and impoverished rural communities in the Boland and Western Cape. The Anna Foundation assists disadvantaged schools by providing academic, social and environmental support after school hours and equipping children with skills for lifelong learning.

This is being achieved through literacy, sport and life skills programs: The “3 R’s: Reading, Running and Right-ing”.  This programme is based on a philosophy of holistic development and a belief in ‘Healthy Body, Healthy Mind’ and involves Reading, Running and Right-ing (education, physical development and right living).  Read More
